So Yo ,
Attended a lecture at Melbourne university given by Barbra Bolt, artist and VCA lecturer, about Heidegger's essay Being and Time and her interpretation of his theory's, in particular in relation to tool analysis and the impact this has for her practise. breaking down how we experience reality before we try to organize it according to our own worlds, the notion that practical behavior creates its own sight and that ideas, in relation to the artist, are found through doing, by being-in-the-world.i found the references to living through habit very relevant in relation to drawing, the practice of seeing rather than knowing. the idea that by dealing with the nature of the world the world begins to unveil itself.
'We live in an instrumentalist world', that we USE in order to... rather than we interact with, materials, that instead of entering into a skill set and relationship with our practise, we as artist are concerned with a mastery over our practise and that this is a foolish and naive way to interpret the practise of art making.
"The more we handle it the more original our relation ship is too it".
i felt intrigued but mildly disappointed by her lack of structure and seeming desire to discuss things as a philosopher rather than as an artist.
there we a few dud attendees, that was heartening, unfortunately one of them spent most of the time nodding off and then lamely attempting to draw the video camera recording the lecture in order to keep themselves awake.
there is another free lecture at Melbourne in a few weeks about Michel Foucault that may be of interest.
